Guelph Photographer is Finalist for Canada’s Portrait Photographer of the Year

Sooooo, this happened.

I have been a member of the Professional Photographers of Canada (PPOC) for 4 or 5 years now. Every year all “Accredited” photographers are allowed to enter four images into the National Image Salon. There are many different categories and styles of photography, such as categories like Portrait, Wedding, Fine Art, Landscape, Wildlife, Commercial, Child Portrait and Fashion, just to name a few.

Every year there are four major awards given out. These are called POTY for short, “Photographer of the Year”. There are four different “POTY’s”: Commercial, Artist, Wedding and Portrait.

To qualify for a POTY you have to enter four images in certain categories and have all four of those images “accepted” into the National Salon. Of all the qualifiers, the “Finalists”, are those that have the highest combined scores of the four accepted images.

Images are judged over two days by two panels of five judges and one alternate. All entries are entered anonymously. If one judge knows who the maker of a photo is, they step aside and the alternate judge steps in, so there is absolutely no favoritism.

This year I entered four images in the Portrait categories in the hopes of getting all four images in the show for the first time. Every year I enter I go 3 for 4. Well….this year it finally happened. BAMMMMM!

I am very happy to announce that not only did I get all four images in, but I also scored high enough to be one of five Finalists for Canada’s Portrait Photographer of the Year.

Below are the four images with their names and the category they were entered in.

The awards will be give out the end of April in Ottawa, Ontario at the International Photography Conference and Expo.

I am very proud to have my name on the same list as the other four amazing portrait photographers.

Thank you to my fabulous clients. You all ROCK!

Another huge thank-you goes out to my incredible family. Your support over the years has been nothing short of AMAZING!

Enchanted Forest

“I had told my 3 year old daughter that we were going to do enchanted forest pictures the following day, and having no idea what that meant she was excited to go somewhere and dress up in her fairy costume.  We arrived at Johnโ€™s studio and she was a bit apprehensive, but John knew exactly what to do to bring her out of her shell by talking to her in an age-appropriate manner and initially having me close to her.  She was excited to see all parts of the detailed set John had ready and quickly started following instructions and posing for pictures.  She especially loved that she was able to hold some of the animals that were included in the set.  The following weekend Penelope asked if we could go back to do fairy pictures again!  We just finished viewing the pictures and are thrilled with the results, this was a wonderful experience for both my daughter and I. Weโ€™ll soon have beautiful pictures in our home that capture the magic of her imagination and discovery of new things.” – Janet Cutler

Guelph Spider-man

The Amazing Spectacular Guelph Spider-man

Brandon Bott is Spider-ma

2 Superheros in one week in the studio…. how cool is that. Last wee Superman was in the studio (my son Austin)

This week Brando Bott…. also known around the City of Guelph as “Guelph Spectacular Spider-man”

Brandon asked me to create an image like the movie poster to put on his car. Soooooo here it is.

Spidy and I had a blast going through different poses and action shots and I am really looking forward to playing with those in the coming weeks. But I wanted to finish up the image that was requested so Spider-man can get this made for his car.

It was also fun having my son come down to the studio and give Spidy some ideas for posing….. and Brandon did not disappoint.

Check out Brandons Facebook page and talk to him about making appearances at special events like Birthday Parties.

Now if only I could talk Spinder-man into shoveling my driveway for me today. ๐Ÿ™‚

Here is the before and after photo. Let me know what you think ๐Ÿ™‚

Week 4, 2017

This weeks topic….”Comfort Zone”

This is taken from Wikipedia

“A comfort zone is a psychological state in which things feel familiar to a person and they are at ease and in control of their environment, experiencing low levels of anxiety and stress. In this zone, a steady level of performance is possible.[1]”

Writing every week on a topic like this….. is way outside my comfort zone. ๐Ÿ™‚

As an artist, this is something I struggle with all the time. It is scary trying new things, especially when you are “somewhat” successful at what you are presently doing. The phrase “don’t fix what ain’t broke” comes to mind. But after being a full time professional photographer in Guelph for 7 years I feel like I need to make changes and challenge myself….. or boredom will set in. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE my job and what I am doing, BUT…… I need to get out of my “comfort zone” and try new things.

SOOOOOOO, enter “The Enchanted Forest”. What is that you ask? First, let’s picture the photographer. I am 5′ 11 and weigh about 190 lbs. I work out five times a week. I have a shaved head, a cool new tattoo, a mean looking goatee and some would say I look a bit intimidating. I am a father of a crazy cool six year-old boy and for the first time, I am photographing 3 – 8 year old princesses in my studio. Yep….. let that visual sink in for a bit. ๐Ÿ™‚

Now, I have photographed hundreds of kids and families, and I am comfortable and at ease with that demographic. But the frilly fantasy photos…this is WAY outside my comfort zone as I know absolutely nothing about princesses and fairies. I even locked my office door when I was doing research on princesses and fairies so my wife wouldn’t walk in and see me looking at photos and inspiration on the internet. ๐Ÿ™‚ I had to ask my wife who “Tinkerbell” was so I had something to talk about with the beautiful little princesses in the studio. But I have to be honest…after shooting three test sessions in the studio, I am totally pumped to launch this promo and hopefully photograph 20 little princesses on Family Day Weekend. (watch out for the promo and all the details.)

So this week, I challenge all of you to try something outside your comfort zone. Feel free to check back in here and comment with what you did and how you felt. I would love to hear from you.

Week 3 , 2017

Soooooooo…. it is Monday and I am a day late with my blog post, but I do have a great excuse……. NFL Playoffs…. nuff said ๐Ÿ™‚

Ok, so this post is not about football (cough cough Go Green Bay cough cough), but it is actually inspired by yesterday’s games.

If you missed it, The Packers destroyed Dallas ……. well ok, they won on a field goal with only seconds left on the clock…….. but this is my blog post and I will write it as I want to.  ๐Ÿ™‚

All kidding aside, this game was EPIC and by far one of the best NFL games I have watched. Not because my team won, well ok that might have a little something to do with it, but because of how both teams played and never quit until the end.

So this week’s topic is…..

Determination :

a :  the act of deciding definitely and firmly; also :  the result of such an act of decision

b :  firm or fixed intention to achieve a desired end

As a father of an amazing 6 year old I am reminded daily what it is like to be learning new things every day. I watch Austin struggle with things that are simple to me….. like tying shoes…….. Ok most of my shoes are slip on and sandals, but I can honestly say I know how to tie my own shoes. It amazes me how easily adults give up on things, and yet 6 year olds will keep trying.

Austin started basketball this winter for the first time. Look at the intensity in the photo below. From the beginning, Austin spent most of his time shooting on the regulation baskets and not the smaller ones that were set up for the kids. The first day during the free shooting part of the session, I was trying to get him to shoot on the smaller baskets. “No daddy, I want to shoot on the big nets like the real basketball players do, the other ones are too easy.”  Determination with a capital D.

Now back to the Packers. Did I tell you they won their play off game against Dallas yesterday????? ๐Ÿ™‚

If you get a chance take a look at the last drive, especially the last throw Aaron Rogers makes down the side line. When all looked lost and the play dead, he found an opening and the rest is history, well after Crosby nails the field goal to end the game.

Determination, yes it is every where. Ask yourself this week….. what are you determined to accomplish in the next six days?

Week 2 , 2017

First I just wanted to thank everyone who sent messages and comment about last week’s post. I had a lot of great feedback. So I am excited to keep this going……. here we go.

I was struggling all day trying to decide what to write about tonight. I was jotting down words and phrases, I looked up some of my favorite quotes, but nothing was jumping out at me. Well, that was until my wife, son and I had an epic Nerf Gun battle in our living room. I kept taking a moment to look at my wife and son’s faces as we ran around. I wished I had been able to photograph the happy expressions…… but to be honest, I was pinned down in a corner with Nerf bullets whipping by, so I couldn’t get to a camera.

SO “Happiness” is going to be our word for the week.

Happiness

Here is what Wikipedia says….

Happiness is a mental or emotional state of well-being defined by positive or pleasant emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy. Happy mental states may also reflect judgements by a person about their overall well-being.

But I am sure everyone knows exactly what the word means, or at least knows what it feels like.

Today during the epic Nerf gun battle,  I could hear our son Austin giggling the whole time, laughing hysterically at daddy getting shot in the bum by mommy, and shrieking with joy every time he was attacked. Yes, this was an incredibly happy moment in our day.

Happiness can be caused by many, many things. When I look back at my day today to count the things that made me happy, the list is long. Now, happiness can come on different levels and at any time. Let’s take a look at just some of the things that made me happy today.

As some of you know, I have been trying to lose weight and get back into shape. This morning I jumped on the scales to find out I had lost the 4 or 5 lbs I put on over the Christmas holidays ( thanks Santa). The scale said 187.7 lbs…….. HAPPY DANCE.

I went to the gym and was struggling a bit trying to get in a good work out. I watched a newer member ( or at least one that I hadn’t seen before) kicking butt on the elliptical machine. It wasn’t the fact that she was working hard, it was the fact that she was mouthing the words of a song that was she was listening to on her headphones. Now when I say mouthing, I actually mean doing the best damn air band solo in history. I mean it was just like she was in front of 50,000 screaming fans. I so wanted to go up to her and ask what song she was listening too, but after watching her, I was immediately in a different mood and went on to have an amazing work out.

Back at home, Austin had been asking to build a fort in the living room with some old photography backdrops I had given him to play with. Watching him bounce around with excitement as we planned out how and where to build the fort made me feel like a kid again……. well except I had just had a killer work out and could barely lift my arms over my head. ๐Ÿ™‚

The fort was built in no time at all and lunch was being served.

After lunch Austin was given 15 minutes on the iPad to play some games. Next thing I know all three of us are huddled under the fort playing on the iPad. Yes, happiness comes in all shapes and sizes. ๐Ÿ™‚

Next was the epic Nerf Gun battle…… you already know about that.

After that I had to go into the office to do a bit of work for a client and to plan out my session for tomorrow. I was chatting with my client who I am photographing in the studio tomorrow about ideas and what not, and I felt myself getting excited for work, yes you read that right, EXCITED FOR WORK. Most days I absolutely love my job and tomorrow is going to be one of those days.

Sunday night at the Wills house is usually family movie night with dinner in front of the TV.  We had decided to watch “Finding Nemo”. When I put the dvd in I heard the familiar music from “The Wonderful World of Disney” and it brought back memories of being a kid and watching Disney with my family. Yes, happiness can come at you from all things. Sometimes they are little, sometimes they are memories, sometimes they are a child laughing, sometimes it by getting shot in the ass by a Nerf gun.

Have a very happy week everyone.

John

Willsie’s Weekly Word

Week 1, 2017

So another year has past and we awoke this morning to new beginnings and excitement for the year to come.

Every week I will be making a blog post about a phase, thought, word or experience to hopefully help you make the most of the following 7 days.

Now I want to be clear…… I am not a doctor, psychiatrist or counselor…… I am a photographer. (if you hadn’t figured that out yet) I will only be sharing my thoughts, experiences and opinions in hopes that we can all have a SPECTACULAR year in 2017.

I may only post a photo, sometimes I will share a video other times I will just ramble on a bit ๐Ÿ™‚

I hope you get something out of it every week and please let me know your thoughts by commenting.

So to start things of I am going to talk about a phrase that I now have tattooed on my arm.

” A negative mind will never give you a positive life”

Guelph Photographers

Every day I struggle with negative thoughts…… YES EVERY DAY. These negative thoughts can be about my business, my body/health, my personal life or about people in my life and many many other things.

These negative thoughts can change my mood drastically and NEVER do me any good what so ever.

In past experiences negative thoughts have only ever brought on negative things.

Just like positive thoughts will bring on positive things.

Don’t believe me?  Next time you are having a bad day…. stop and think about how and when it all started.

Do the same thing when you are having a great day. I think you will see that most of the time your mind and thoughts were either negative or positive.

So I had the tattoo done a few days ago on the my left forearm. Now when ever I start having negative thoughts I look down on my arm and read the words…. ” A negative mind will never give you a positive life “.  I am not telling you to go out and get this tattooed on your arm or anything like that, but why not write it down on a piece of paper and put it on your fridge or beside your computer?

The next time you find yourself thinking negatively…. say this phrase and change your thoughts to something positive.

Try this for a week and see if more positive things start happening in your life. And then check back here for next weeks post.

Now this is just the first post in this series…. I am stepping out of my comfort zone doing this and I will get better as the weeks go by.

I plan on having the most SPECTACULAR year in 2017…… want to join me?
