Enchanted Forest Photographers in Guelph

Willsie’s Weekly Word

Week 4, 2017

This weeks topic….”Comfort Zone”

This is taken from Wikipedia

“A comfort zone is a psychological state in which things feel familiar to a person and they are at ease and in control of their environment, experiencing low levels of anxiety and stress. In this zone, a steady level of performance is possible.[1]”

Writing every week on a topic like this….. is way outside my comfort zone. 🙂

As an artist, this is something I struggle with all the time. It is scary trying new things, especially when you are “somewhat” successful at what you are presently doing. The phrase “don’t fix what ain’t broke” comes to mind. But after being a full time professional photographer in Guelph for 7 years I feel like I need to make changes and challenge myself….. or boredom will set in. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE my job and what I am doing, BUT…… I need to get out of my “comfort zone” and try new things.

SOOOOOOO, enter “The Enchanted Forest”. What is that you ask? First, let’s picture the photographer. I am 5′ 11 and weigh about 190 lbs. I work out five times a week. I have a shaved head, a cool new tattoo, a mean looking goatee and some would say I look a bit intimidating. I am a father of a crazy cool six year-old boy and for the first time, I am photographing 3 – 8 year old princesses in my studio. Yep….. let that visual sink in for a bit. 🙂

Now, I have photographed hundreds of kids and families, and I am comfortable and at ease with that demographic. But the frilly fantasy photos…this is WAY outside my comfort zone as I know absolutely nothing about princesses and fairies. I even locked my office door when I was doing research on princesses and fairies so my wife wouldn’t walk in and see me looking at photos and inspiration on the internet. 🙂 I had to ask my wife who “Tinkerbell” was so I had something to talk about with the beautiful little princesses in the studio. But I have to be honest…after shooting three test sessions in the studio, I am totally pumped to launch this promo and hopefully photograph 20 little princesses on Family Day Weekend. (watch out for the promo and all the details.)

So this week, I challenge all of you to try something outside your comfort zone. Feel free to check back in here and comment with what you did and how you felt. I would love to hear from you.
